It is critical for clinicians to use the latest available evidence for clinical decision making especially for deciding on medical diagnosis and treatments. Considering the large body of dissemination and uncertainty in evidences, it is crucial for an evidence based practice, to be able to identify the quality of evidence in order to use the best available. But sometimes it is difficult for clinicians to understand different methods of critical appraisals. Here we will talk about how to assess the quality of evidence in an easy to understand manner with examples of incontinence management using a practical tool. The talks will include the following headings:
- Types of evidence used by clinicians and quality of evidences in continence care guidelines
- The traditional way of assessing levels of evidence and its limitations
- The GRADE solution for evaluating the quality of evidence
- Assessing the risk of bias
- Assessing Inconsistency of results
- Assessing Indirectness of results
- Assessing imprecision
- Assessing publication bias
After a short overview of all the factors that affect quality of evidence as listed above, we will focus on part of them to provide more details (from level of evidences to quality of evidence). We will then present sample evidence from inconsistency research and go forward to show how a clinician can assess the quality of evidence in the field of incontinence practice. We will finally provide a short time to answer questions or discuss comments.
