Dr. Birder is currently Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology and Cell Biology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is also an associate member of the UPSOM/UPMC Aging Institute. She has been recognized for her studies of sensory properties of the urinary bladder urothelium in both bladder health and disease and her work is supported by an NIH MERIT Award as well as current NIH (R01) grants exploring the influence of aging and autonomic dysregulation and oxidative stress on bladder pain. Dr. Birder serves on the American Urological Association Research Council, past chair of the basic science program for the Society for Urology and Female Urodynamics and current co-scientific chair for the International Continence Society. She has served on a number of editorial boards and external advisor/collaborator for several US and European urology initiatives.
