One of the very few fellowship-trained reconstructive and neuro-urologists in Florida, Dr. Gousse is the Director of Bladder Health Program of South Florida, South Broward Hospital Districts. He is the Director of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Urology at the Memorial Hospital Miramar.
He is a former tenured Professor of Urology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Department of Urology, Vice-Chairman of the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics Urology service, where he was also the Urology Residency Program Director and Fellowship Director for Female Urology, Urodynamics, and Reconstructive Surgery for more than ten years. He was also the Director of the Urodynamics Laboratory at the VA Medical Center where he also supervised the Neuro-Urologic care of the spinal cord injured patients.
After graduating as the valedictorian of the City University of New York (York College) with a perfect GPA in his major, Dr. Gousse received his medical degree with highest honors from the Yale University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas and a postdoctoral fellowship in Urodynamics, female urology and pelvic floor reconstruction at the University of California, Los Angeles. Certified by the American Board of Urology, he has performed more than one-thousand complex reconstructive procedures. He is one of a handful of urologists performing urethroplasty in the state of Florida and was the first to perform Sacral Nerve Modulation (Interstim) and intra-detrusor injection of Botox for urinary problems in South Florida .
Dr. Gousse’s research interests have focused on overactive bladder neuropharmacology, reconstruction, neurogenic urinary incontinence, as well as functional recovery from spinal cord injury. An international leader in voiding dysfunction, he pioneered the optimal dosage of neurotoxins (Botox ) to manage bladder dysfunction. He investigator-initiated research projects in Botox chemodernervation in human subjects led to the first FDA urologic indication of Botox in the United States.
Dr. Gousse also participated and co-authored in clinical trials which led to the FDA approval of the first Beta-3 drug to treat overactive bladder, Merebegron ( marketed as Myrbetriq ) .
He also collaborated on extramural NIH grants with Dr Vinata Lokeshwar to investigate urinary markers for interstitial cystitis.
Dr. Gousse has authored or co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific publications and numerous textbook chapters, journal articles and abstracts. He participates as a guest professor in the United States and abroad on various aspects of reconstructive urology and voiding dysfunction, and he regularly lectures as an expert in the field of urology. He has been a panelist at the American Urologic Association (AUA) yearly meeting on numerous occasions. He is appointed to the board for the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) . He is the Chairperson for the AUA – SUFU meeting (2014) . A former Genito-Urinary Reconstructive Surgeons (GURS) board member he led a group of reconstructive surgeons to train urologists in third world countries. In addition, Dr. Gousse served on the American Urology Association Female Urology Core Curriculum Committee and as the Section Editor of the Female Urology section in the journal Current Urology Reports. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Urology, Neuro-Urology and Urodynamics, Urology .
A radio and TV personality in the Haitian community, Dr. Gousse is a regular guest on Island TV. He is the founder of the Radio Show “ Urologic Consultation in Creole” dedicated to educate the Creole speaking population of South Florida and the Bahamas about urologic diseases. He recently developed a popular weekly Television Show “Urology Health” dedicated to the usage of visual aids in order to educate the general public on urologic problems.
Listed in Best Doctors in America 2005-2013, Best Doctors US News and World Report 2011-2012, America’s Top Urologists by the prestigious Consumer’s Research Council of America 2008, Strathmore’s Who’s Who since 2001, the Miller University of Miami Medical School’s Urology Teacher of the Year Award on numerous occasions, the Pfizer Scholars in Urology Award, the Cullen Research Award from the Scott Department of Urology, Baylor College
of Medicine, and the Dr. Jonas Salk Scholar Award for his work on E.coli microbial genetics, Dr. Gousse remains a dedicated teacher, mentor, a researcher, and community servant. He is co-founder and president of the Haitian American Leadership Organization (HALO), a charitable organization established to further community outreach in underserved areas to benefit the less fortunate.
