This is an example of the PFM exercise class that has been used in all the randomised controlled trials (RCT) coming out of Norway, and originated by professor Kari Bø in 1986. This is the first PFM group exercise class in the world and was part of the first PFM training RCT and PhD led by a physiotherapist.

The programme has proven to be very effective in treating Stress Urinary Incontinence. The same principles of exercise have also been used individually and have been very effective for POP (both anatomical and symptomatic) as well as for men. The training is based on exercise science and recommendations for strength training in general, and has always been built on an individual instruction, observation, palpation and assessment of ability to perform a correct PFM contraction by a physiotherapist. In addition, we also assess PFM vaginal resting pressure, strength and endurance.

The participants at ICS 2024 will take part in a regular supervised class performing 5 sets of 8-12 PFM contractions in different positions. In the breaks between the PFM sets, we will carry out other exercises important for women’s health in general (but not in any intention that these exercises have any effect on the PFM) such as strength training of the abdominals, back and thigh muscles, breathing, stretching and relaxation exercises with a focus on posture and ergonomics. These additional exercises will be accompanied by music.

Participants will need to wear loose clothing, enabling you to carry out exercises with legs apart and on the floor.

It is strongly recommended to bring a towel with you to this class, or a yoga mat if you have space in your luggage. This will provide you with a more comfortable surface for you to carry out the exercises.

We look forward to welcoming you to the ICS 2024 Madrid PFM Exercise Class!
